10cc | I'm Not In Love

Reaching number one and number two in the UK and US, respectively, “I’m Not in Love” won three Ivor Novello awards for 10cc in 1976 including Best Pop Song. An adventurous track that was built around a 12-foot tape loop of the band’s multi-tracked voices, the song featured a unique use of the band’s Minimoog.

“We decided to record all the instrumentation in the control room as opposed to the live room.” Drummer Kevin Godley remembers. “So we were recording all the other instruments, like electric piano, guitar and bass plugged directly through the mixing desk, I wasn’t going to bring a drum kit in there. So, we used the Moog to concoct something resembling a bass drum sound.”

At just over six minutes in length Godley had to tap out the electronic beat on the Model D without the benefit of a metronome or click track. The band took about half a dozen swings at getting the feel right before picking the best take. Their clever use of the synth, along with their novel recording techniques blended seamlessly to concoct 10cc’s biggest chart success.

“It’s a very old school way of putting a track together but using a very new school piece of instrumentation.”
