Beastie Boys | Shake Your Rump

When the Beastie’s decamped from New York to L.A. in early 1988, the bad boy Hip Hop trio had left their label, their home turf and a fair amount of their creative process behind them. What they ran into on the West Coast was a crew of experimental beatmakers who were taking a buffet style approach to putting together tracks from dozens of funk, soul and fusion records. Eventually known as the Dust Brothers, John King and Mike Simpson were pushing the limits of early sampling technology to bang out tunes in a home studio they were sharing with two other local self-made producers, Mario Caldato and Matt Dink.

Out of this team of hot shot collaborators came a demo of a track initially known as “Full Clout,” which was exciting enough to get the Beasties a new home at Capitol Records. Eventually re-christened as “Shake Your Rump,” the piece was a raucous call and response workout that featured a Minimoog sample from the original motion picture soundtrack to the 1976 comedy “Car Wash.”

Performed by the soul outfit Rose Royce, the brief interlude called “6 O’Clock DJ (Let’s Rock)” features a growling filtered line from the Model D that gives “Shake Your Rump” it’s unforgettable raw groove. Once released the song would become just one of the many highlights from the Beastie’s “Paul’s Boutique” album, which some say was the most forward-thinking Hip Hop record of the era.
