Earth, Wind & Fire | Boogie Wonderland
Just as Hip Hop was about to let the air out of the Disco balloon, Earth Wind & Fire found a few more coals to toss onto the dance floor. EWF honcho Maurice White had assumed the production reins in 1976 for The Emotions – an all-sister vocal group he helped get to the top of the charts the following year.
Fast forward to 1979 and Maurice drafted the Emotions to sing on a song co-written by hitmakers Allee Willis and John Lind. Uplifted by a fiery horn section and an unstoppable four on the floor groove, “Boogie Wonderland” wound up showcasing the wide array of talent both groups brought to the session. It fell to keyboardist Larry Dunn and his deep arsenal of keyboards to color in much of the track’s underlying arrangement. A longtime Minimoog player, Dunn wound up matching Verdine White’s bass guitar parts by pumping out funky, distorted eighth notes on his Model D during the song’s bridge.
The track became Earth Wind & Fire’s fifth U.S. Top 10, and scored the band a nomination for Best Disco Recording in 1980, the only year the Grammy’s saw fit to have such a category. And while it might have been part of Disco’s last hurrah, the hundreds of millions of plays it’s had in the streaming era stand as a testament to how “Boogie Wonderland” continues to endure.
